Three Terrapins Named All-ACC Academic

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Three members of the Maryland softball team were named to the Atlantic Coast Conference's All-Academic Team, announced Tuesday. Freshmen Shannon Bustillos and Kaitlyn Schmeiser, as well as junior Nikki Maier earned the honor.
It is the first ACC All-Academic recognition for all three Maryland honorees.
All eight ACC schools that sponsor softball are represented on this year's All-ACC Academic Team. Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech led with six players, while Boston College and Florida State placed five on the team. Three players were honored from Maryland, North Carolina, and NC State, and two Virginia players were recognized.
To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
Bustillos, a criminology and criminal justice major, started in all 56 games behind the plate and hit .281 on the year. She lead the team in home runs with seven and knocked in 33 RBI. She was twice named ACC Player of the Week.
Maier served as the Terps' starter at second base and hit .280 on the season with 35 hits and 30 RBI. She is a kinesiology major.
Schmeiser saw action in the circle in 23 games for 79.0 innings. She pitched six complete games and notched 60 strikeouts. Schmeiser is studying studio art.
The Terrapins made their third straight NCAA Regionals appearance in May for the first time in school history. They went 34-22 on the year, after winning 14 of 16 to close the regular season.
