COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team has added Corey Haines as a volunteer assistant coach, Terrapin head coach John Szefc announced Thursday.

After spending last season at Shippensburg University as a volunteer assistant working with the infielders, Haines returns to College Park after spending three seasons with the Terps as a volunteer and student assistant from 2009 to 2011. Haines will work with the Terrapin infielders, and direct all baseball camps and assist with on-campus recruiting.

"Corey is a great overall fit for this program,” said Szefc. “He has a lot of passion for Maryland. He is a good fit because he is versatile. With Jimmy [Belanger] handling the pitchers, Rob [Vaughn] handling the catchers and my responsibilities with the infielders, Corey can bounce between all three of us and help in all three areas.

"He has the experience of running his own team and he knows Maryland. It is kind of like bringing a guy back because he knows this campus so well. He is a good, young baseball guy and a Maryland guy.”

In 2009, Haines joined the team as volunteer assistant under former head coach Terry Rupp and continued as a student assistant from 2010-11 under former head coach Erik Bakich. Haines' duties included throwing batting practice, assisting with on-campus recruiting visits and working with the outfielders. Haines also assisted in implementing and analyzing the hitting and pitching video analysis system.

A native of Elkton, Md., Haines served as the head coach for the Alexandria Aces of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League in 2011 and 2012. Last season, Haines guided the Aces to a franchise-high 20 wins and playoff berth.

Additionally, Haines coached current Terps Anthony Papio in 2012 and Greg Olenski in 2011, as well as managed the Cal Ripken All-Star team.

Prior to enrolling at Maryland, Haines played two seasons at Cecil College in North East, Md. In 2007, Haines helped the squad reach the regional championship game and in 2008 helped the Seahawks win the Maryland JUCO title.

Haines graduated from Maryland in 2011 with a degree in kinesiology.
