Scouting the Terps
-Riding a nine-game winning streak, Maryland begins its ACC slate this weekend with a trip to Davenport Field to take on 25th-ranked Virginia. The Terps and Cavs are scheduled for a three-game set beginning Friday at 5 p.m.
-The Terps have won nine games in a row following a four-game sweep of Princeton last weekend. It marks Maryland's second consecutive weekend sweep after taking four games from Oakland Feb. 22-24. During this nine-game stretch, the Terps are hitting .323 with a .444 slugging percentage and have scored 85 runs with 30 extra base hits.
-In Maryland's nine wins, the Terps have outscored their opponents 85-25 and are averaging 9.44 runs per game. Against Princeton, Maryland outscored the Tigers 40-9 and scored a minimum of six runs in all four contests.
-In seven of the past eight games, Maryland has benefited from one explosive inning and scored at least four runs during that inning. Against Princeton, the Terps scored eight runs in the first inning of game two, five runs in the seventh in game three, and six runs in the fifth inning of game four.
-The Terps have been one of the most aggressive teams in the country on the bases. Maryland is third nationally and leads the ACC in stolen bases with 44 and is averaging 3.67 stolen bases per game, which also ranks third nationally.
-Maryland's bats have been finding the gaps in the outfield to start the season. The Terps have 30 doubles, a total that ranks fifth nationally and third in the conference. Five Terrapins are tied with a team-best four doubles: Matt Bosse, Jordan Hagel, Michael Montville, LaMonte Wade and Charlie White.
-White has been the focal point of Maryland's running game so far this season. White has an ACC-best 15 stolen bases, which ranks second in the nation, heading into the weekend. He stole four in game one of a Friday doubleheader against Oakland (2/22) becoming the first player to do that since 1998 (Larry Long vs. Howard 4/15/98).
-Kyle Convissar and Jimmy Reed turned in career performances this past weekend. In game one of Saturday's DH against Princeton, Convissar had a career-high five hits and a career-best five RBI. The previous day, Reed struck out a personal-best 10 batters over six scoreless innings.
-Through 12 games, White leads the team in hitting (.432), slugging percentage (.541), OBP (.611) and stolen bases (15), and is tied with Convissar for the team lead in hits (16). Convissar has a team-best 12 RBI. Hagel and Blake Schmit are tied for the team lead in home runs (1) and Schmit has a team-high 15 runs scored.
Scouting the Cavaliers
-Virginia enters the weekend series as one of the three remaining unbeaten teams in the ACC (Florida State 12-0, North Carolina 11-0). The Cavaliers took two from Bucknell and two from Harvard last weekend.
-UVa ranks second in the ACC and 12th in the nation in pitching with a 1.92 ERA, and ranks third in hitting in the ACC and seventh nationally with a .334 batting average. The pitching staff has three shutouts this season, while the offense has scored at least 11 runs in seven of its 12 games.
-Two of Virginia's three projected weekend starting pitchers rank in the top six in the ACC in ERA. Projected Friday night starter Brandon Waddell is fifth in the conference with a 0.57 ERA and projected Sunday starter Nick Howard is sixth with a 0.56 ERA.
-Offensively, Branden Cogswell leads the conference in OBP (.618) and is tied for third in BA (.487). Cogswell's total of 14 base on balls ranks sixth in the nation. He has scored a team-high 21 runs, which ranks second in the ACC.
Looking Ahead
Maryland returns home to begin a 10-game homestand as the Terps welcome Marist to College Park on Tuesday, March 12 in a doubleheader beginning at noon. Next weekend, Maryland plays host to 18th-ranked Florida State with the series beginning Friday, March 15 at 6:30 p.m.
