Scouting the Terps
-The Terps prepare to play host to their second-to-last ACC homestand of the season as Virginia Tech arrives in College Park . The three-game set is scheduled to begin Friday at 6:30 p.m. with the featured pitching matchup between Jimmy Reed and Brad Markey.
-The Terps are 15-8 at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium, but are 3-6 in their nine ACC contests. Maryland dropped two of three games against No. 7 Florida State (3/15-17), Wake Forest (3/22-24), and Miami (4/12-14).
-Maryland's offensive and defensive numbers have been higher at home as compared to its season averages. On the year, Maryland is batting .283 overall with a 3.55 ERA and a .976 fielding percentage. At home, those numbers have seen an increase. The Terps are batting .294 with a 2.99 ERA and a .979 fielding percentage. In addition, 72 of the team's 100 extra-base hits have come at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
-Reed, Friday night's projected starter, has been stellar in his home ballpark. The senior is 4-0 with a 1.00 ERA while holding opponents to a .212 BA in five starts. Reed is averaging 8.25 K/9 in the five starts. Last time out, Reed held Miami (4/12) scoreless over nine innings while tying a career high with 10 Ks.
-Maryland has stolen at least two bases in seven of the its last 10 games and continues to be one of the most aggressive teams in the country on the basepaths. The Terps lead the ACC with 84 steals, a total which is tied for 12th nationally. NC State is the next closest team in the conference with 66 SBs.
-Charlie White leads the ACC in steals (34) and ranks second nationally trailing Campbell's Ben McQuown by four. White is averaging 0.89 steals per game and has swiped 10 bags in 18 ACC games, which is the highest total in the conference. By stealing his 34th base of the season against Mt. St. Mary's (4/17), White became Maryland's all-time single-season stolen base leader.
-The Terps have 83 doubles, which is tied for second in the conference and is 10th nationally. The Terps are averaging 2.18 per game, which is the second-best average in the ACC. The team is within striking distance of the program-record 129 doubles in 2001.
Scouting the Hokies
-Virginia Tech arrives in College Park having lost eight of its last nine games including being swept in its last two ACC series (NC State and North Carolina). The Hokies dropped a midweek contest against Tennessee, 5-4, on Tuesday.
-VT ranks seventh in the ACC in batting and ranks fifth in scoring. The Hokies are averaging 6.6 runs per game with a .282 BA. The Hokies have hit 33 home runs on the season, which ranks third in the ACC and 15th nationally.
-As a pitching staff, the club has a 4.51 ERA and is averaging 9.83 H/9. The Hokies are only averaging 6.2 K/9, which ranks 10th in the ACC, and hold a WHIP of 1.53, the third-highest average in the conference.
-Andrew Rash leads the team in slugging (.551), RBI (40), doubles (13) and home runs (7) to go along with a .320 BA.
-The Hokies' bullpen has received strong contributions from Jake Joyce and Clark Labitan. Joyce has a 2.70 ERA in 40.0 innings of work. Labitan has a team-high five saves to go with 24 Ks in 30.2 IP.
Looking Ahead
Maryland continues its homestand Tuesday at 4 p.m. when it welcomes Liberty to College Park for the first of two games with the Flames this season. The Terps travel to Towson on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. contest before heading to Durham for a weekend series with Duke.
