Freshman lefthander Alex Robinson gave Maryland seven strong innings and the offense scored in six of its eight turns at-bat in an 11-3 win over Towson on Tuesday at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
Robinson surrendered only one run on six hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings, which tied a personal best. The freshman, who has received a no-decision in eight of his 11 starts, received plenty of offensive support on Tuesday. The Terps scored at least one run from the second inning through the sixth.
Leading 4-1 in the fifth, Maryland broke the game open on a bases-clearing double from Jose Cuas as the Terps plated four runs in the frame. The Terps scored the first run of the inning when Blake Schmit was hit with a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run.
Cuas stepped in and with two outs lined a 2-2 pitch down the left-field line to score three. It was Cuas' fourth double of the season and increased his season RBI total to 16.
Eight different Terrapins recorded a hit in the victory with Charlie White singling twice and adding a RBI. The sophomore also stole his ACC-leading 37th base of the season. White now has 59 career stolen bases tying him with Todd Nutter for the third-most all-time at Maryland. White is three stolen bases shy of tying the career program mark.
Towson opened the scoring with one run in the second. The Tigers executed a perfect hit-and-run to score first. With Brendan Butler running on the pitch, Hunter Bennett doubled to left center bringing Butler home from first.
Robinson settled in after the second and retired eight of the next 10 Tiger batters. The offense answered in support of Robinson with a run in the second and third, two runs in the fourth, four runs in the fifth, and one run in the sixth.
Schmit knotted the game at one with a two-out RBI single to right field. The Terps took the lead in the third as White scored from second after the first baseman mishandled a potential double-play ball.
In the fourth, the Terps put runners at first and second to begin the inning after a throwing error on Towson starter Kyle Paul allowed Jack Cleary.
Following the four-run fifth, Maryland tacked on a run in the sixth on a RBI ground out and added two more runs in the eighth on a bases-loaded error by the right fielder to increase its lead to 11-1.
Robinson earned his first career win to improve his record to 1-2. Paul suffered his fourth loss for the Tigers and is now 1-4 on the season.
The Terps travel to Lynchburg, Va., on Wednesday to take on Liberty at 3 p.m.
