Seminoles Upset Fifth-Ranked Terrapins, 74-70
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Kerry Thompson's three-pointer with 1:11 remaining put Florida State ahead to stay and the Seminoles held on for a 74-70 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over fifth-ranked Maryland.
Florida State led by as many as 13 points midway through the second half, but Thompson's three-pointer with 56.7 seconds left snapped a 65-65 tie. Randell Jackson scored 20 points, Ron Hale added 17 and Thompson finished with 14 for the Seminoles (12-5, 3-5 ACC), who handed Maryland its first road loss of the season.
Keith Booth had 20 points and Obinna Ekezie contributed 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Terrapins (17-3, 6-2), whose only losses were to Georgia at the Rainbow Classic and to Clemson at home. Maryland fell to 3-1 on the road.
Hale hit a pair of free throws with 49.8 seconds left, extending Florida State's lead to 70-65. Booth made one of two just over six seconds later to cut the margin to four, but LaMarr Greer hit one foul shot to make it 71-66 with 33.6 seconds remaining.
A Sarunas Jasikevicius jumper got Maryland within 71-68 before Terps coach Gary Williams was hit with a technical and ejected with 24.4 seconds to go. Hale missed both free throws, but the Seminoles retained possession and Jasikevicius was forced to foul. James Collins sank both foul shots with 23.5 to go and Maryland got no closer than three thereafter.
The Terps trailed by as many as seven points late in the first half, but scored the last six and cut the halftime margin to 31-30 on a pair of free throws by Booth.
Neither team shot well in the first 20 minutes. Maryland hit just over 32 percent of its field-goal attempts (10-for-31), while Florida State shot 27 percent (11-for-41).
The Seminoles turned it up in the second half, hitting better than 68 percent of their shots and storming to a 56-43 lead with 10:31 to play. Jackson and Greer hit driving layups during a 6-0 spurt that put Florida State ahead by 13.
The Terps still trailed by 10 with 5:21 left before chipping away. Booth had a free throw and a jumper and Ekezie added a layup to slice the margin to 61-56 with just under four minutes remaining.
Booth converted a three-point play and, after Rodney Elliot hit two free throws, made a layup to boost Maryland into a 65-65 tie with 1:40 left.
