On Malchak: Once again will anchor the Terrapins in the distance events ... one of the elite swimmers in the ACC ... one of the top three point scorers over the past two seasons in College Park ... owns school records in the 500-free (4:25.40) and the 1650-free (15:28.41) ... had an outstanding summer of training.
As a Junior (2000-01): Placed seventh in the 500-free (4:26.78) at the ACC Championships ... also scored in the 1650-free, finishing 12th in a time of 15:36.26 ... was the No. 1 distance swimmer all season for the Terps ... started the year by winning two events at Virginia Tech in both the 500-free (4:41.15) and the 1000-free (9:42.11) ... won the 200-free (1:44.50) and the 500-free (4:42.80) against Howard and Villanova ... came away with two victories in the 500-free (4:36.55) and the 1000-free (9:26.26) against NC State ... won the 1000-free (9:45.56) at UMBC ... two victories against Pittsburgh in the 1650-free (15:52.16) and the 500-free (4:36.26) ... first in the 500-free (4:32.70) at North Carolina ... took home top honors in the 400-IM (4:07.26) at Duke.
As a Sophomore (1999-00): Was one of the top distance swimmers in the ACC with two top 10 finishes at the conference championships … finished sixth at the 2000 ACC Championships in the 500-yard freestyle (4:26.53) and eighth in the 1650-yard freestyle (15:28.41) … won nine events in regular season dual meets for the Terps ... finished the season in the top-three point scorers for the men.
Before Maryland: Arrived at Maryland from Pac-10 competitor Arizona State where he swam distance events for the Sun Devils.
Personal: Born on March 30, 1980 … parents are John (Jack) and Nancy Malchak ... majoring in biology …Malchak's sisters both swam for UMBC, Megan from 1990-94 and Marci from 1994-98.
