Jim Wenhold is in his elevnth season as the head coach of both the men's and women's swimming teams at the University of Maryland. During his decade with the Terrapins, both teams have climbed up the ranks of the ACC.
The all-time winningest women's coach in school history, Wenhold has transformed the Terrapins into one of the nation's top programs. The women ranked as high as 16th in the CSCAA national poll during the season, finishing at No. 20 with an impressive 12-2 record.
The Terrapin women, who finished fourth in the ACC Championships, qualified six swimmers for the NCAA Championships. Shandra Johnson, Megan Knepper, Krisztina Kovacs, Elizabeth Lavell, Inbal Levavi and Jill Martin all competed, with Johnson finishing a team-high fourth in the 200 free (1:45.91). Five women also received All-America honors: Johnson, Knepper, Lavell, Levavi and Martin.
The men's team, meanwhile, has compiled a 60-49 record since Wenhold took over the program. In the past seven years, their record stands at 40-34.
Under Wenhold's leadership, several Terrapin athletes have flourished in the postseason. Johnson (100 free, 200 free, 500 free), Martin (200 breast) and the 400-yard medley relay team of Knepper, Martin, Barbara Sumrall and Johnson won ACC Championships last season. Johnson, Knepper, Lavell, Levavi, Martin and Sumrall all earned All-ACC honors, as well, and Johnson was named the Most Valuable Swimmer of the conference meet.
Wenhold graduated magna cum laude from Maryland in 1985 with a degree in physical education. He was the captain of the swim team his junior and senior years and held the school records in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke as well as the 100-yard freestyle.
