On Childs: On Childs: Returns as one of the top three scorers for the Maryland men's team… he is the current school record holder in the 100-yard backstroke (49.48)... also part of the school record 200 and 400-yard free and medley relay teams ... qualified for the 2000 U.S. Olympic trials and finished 62nd in the 100-meter backstroke (59.34) and 92nd in the 50-meter freestyle (24.33) … Childs returns with the top team times in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke events … fierce competitor who wants to win every time out.
1999-00 Season: 1999-00 Season: One of the top-three point scorers for the men's team ... finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle at the 2000 ACC Championships with a time of 20.38 … also took home ninth in the 100-yard freestyle (45.17) at the conference championships … enjoyed a stellar meet against national powerhouse Virginia where he won the 100-yard freestyle (45.85) and was part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team … was on the winning 400-yard medley relay team that took top honors against Villanova and Pittsburgh … came away with three first-place finishes against George Washington UMBC and NC State in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay … won the 50 and 100-yard freestyle at Howard … finished first in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard medley relay against Duke.
1998-99 Season: One of the top-three point scorers, Childs set the Maryland school record in the 100-yard backstroke at the 1999 ACC Championships with his time of 49.72 which was good enough for ninth place… also took sixth at the conference championships in the 100-yard freestyle (45.10) and ninth in the 100-yard butterfly (49.60) … Childs joined Jason Ward, Aaron Peterson and his brother, Matt Childs, to set two more school records this time with the 200- and 400-yard medley relay teams and both at the 1999 ACC Championships… swam with Peterson, Matt Childs, and Greg Courtois in the 400-yard freestyle relay that finished third at the ACC Championships… also competed with Peterson, Matt Childs, and Angel Prado on the 200-yard freestyle relay team that took fifth at the 1999 ACC Championships… took first once in the 200-yard backstroke (1:55.95) against Villanova on Jan. 16…finished with three firsts in the 100-yard backstroke during the regular season, against Duke on Nov. 8, Villanova on Jan. 16, and Virginia Tech on Jan. 30…Childs also took first in the 100-yard freestyle against Duke on Nov. 8.
1997-98 Season: Placed 10th in the 100-yard backstroke (50.43), 11th in the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.87) and 14th in the 100-yard butterfly at the ACC Championships … swam on the 200-yard medley relay team that placed fifth at the ACC Championships and set the school record (1:30.78) … also swam on the 400-yard freestyle relay team that placed fourth at the ACC Championships (3:02.61) … posted the second-fastest men's team times in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke (50.43 and 1:50.87 respectively) and the third fastest time in the 100-yard butterfly (50.37).
Before Maryland: The 1997 state champion in the 100-yard backstroke (52.12) … swam on the 1995 state champion 200-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay teams.
Personal: Born April 4, 1979 … mother is Anita Childs … a math education major … his brother, Adam, was on Maryland's swimming and diving team last year and still remains in a student-coaching capacity.
