On Luoma: Returns from an excellent junior season in which he was a finalist at the ACC Championships in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle...just off school records in both those events...will be a top contender in the sprint freestyle events.
As a Junior (2001-02): Had a remarkable year as the team's fastest sprinter in both the 50- and the 100-free...scored points in all of his events except for one at the ACC Championships...placed fifth in the 50-yard free (20.47) after a morning preliminary time of 20.33 (NCAA-B cut) and seventh in the 100-yard free (45.17) after a morning preliminary time of 44.83 (NCAA-B cut), both career best times...also was a part of the sixth place 400-yard free relay (3:03.48), the seventh place 200-yard free relay (1:23.17), the fifth place 400-yard medley relay (3:19.11), and the fourth place 200-yard medley relay (1:31.26)...began the season with a third place tie in the 50-yard free (22.03) at NC State and second place in the 100-yard free (48.13)...turned in two second place finishes against Florida State in the 50-yard free (21.47) and the 100-yard free (46.84)...captured three first place finishes the next day against Duke in the 400-yard medley relay (3:29.18), the 50-yard free (21.49) and the 100-yard free (47.34)...swam on the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:35.82) vs. Howard and Hopkins...came in fourth in the 50-yard free (21.63) and third in the 100-yard free (47.23) at Ohio State/Virginia Tech...had an amazing meet against Georgia Tech, capturing three first place finishes again in the 50-yard free (21.44), 100-yard free (46.65), and the 400-yard free relay (3:07.28)...repeated his multiple first place finishes at the Terrapin Cup Invitational, winning the 200-yard free relay (1:24.53), 50-yard free (21.22), 400-yard medley relay (3:24.89), 200-yard medley relay (1:33.48), 100-yard free (46.57) and the 400-yard free relay (3:06.04)...turned in a fifth place finish at Pittsburgh in the 100-yard free (47.37)...finished the year with a fifth place finish in the 50-yard free (21.74) and a fourth place finish in the 100-yard free (47.25) against North Carolina...placed fourth in both the 50-yard free (21.49) and the 100-yard free (47.14) vs. Virginia.
As a Sophomore (2000-01): Was the team's second-fastest sprinter in both the 50- and 100-free behind Drew Childs...had a good showing at the ACC Championships, as he was part of four scoring events...swam on the third-place 400-medley relay (2:58.69) and the fourth-place 200-medley relay (1:20.83), both of which set school records...also placed ninth in the 50-free (20.55) and 14th in the 100-free (45.72) at the conference meet...first on the 400-free relay (1:24.80) and third in the 50-free (48.03) at Virginia Tech...second in the 100-free (48.01) vs. Howard and Villanova...part of the winning 400-free relay (3:09.02) vs. NC State...first with the 400-free relay (3:11.66) at UMBC...two third-place finishes in the 50-free (21.89) and the100-free (47.96) vs. George Washington.
As a Freshman (1999-00): Finished 22nd at the 2000 ACC Championships in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.08 … third in the 50-yard freestyle (21.42) at North Carolina State … was part of the 400-yard medley relay team that came in second against UMBC and was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in the same meet … second in the 400-yard freestyle versus George Washington … placed fourth in the 400-yard medley relay and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle also against the Colonials.
Before Maryland: The 1998-99 Delaware Swimmer of the Year, Luoma was a first-team all-state selection his last three years … his junior year, he broke the state record in the 50-yard freestyle with his time of 21.14 … his senior year, he tied the state record in the 100-yard freestyle with a 46.05.
Personal: Born on May 9, 1981 … parents are Jeffrey and Wendy Luoma … majoring in civil engineering.
