COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A total of seven Maryland student-athletes will compete in nine events at the 2013 NCAA East Regional Championships, set for May 23-25 on the campus of North Carolina A&T in Greensboro.
Senior Moriah Young and sophomore Thea LaFond led the way for the Terps, qualifying in two events. LaFond will participate in the high jump and the triple jump and Young - who just established a new hammer throw record at Maryland last weekend at the ECAC Championships - will compete in the shot put and hammer.
The Terps will have a total of three competitors in the high jump as Amina Smith and Amber Melville will join LaFond in Maryland's strongest event. Melville captured both the indoor and outdoor high jump ACC titles and Smith recently set a personal best with a leap of 5-10.50 at ECAC Championships.
Julie Sinkovitz and Myah Hicks will hope to continue their stellar campaigns with strong showings in the 800 meter and freshman Chioma Onyekwere will join her mentor Young in the shot put. Sinkovitz set a Maryland season-best mark with a 2:07.15 in her preliminary run at the ECAC Championships. Hicks also posted a personal season-best mark.
In addition to the East region, the West region will take place at the University of Texas in Austin. The qualifiers out of these regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
