Maryland surrendered four runs in the first inning and were unable to recover against No. 19 Clemson as the Terps lost the series finale to the Tigers, 9-5, Monday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Charlie White put a capper on a strong series Monday evening. White recorded a career-high four hits, and finished the series with a .571 batting average (8-for-14) and .625 OBP. The sophomore scored three runs, drove in three and stole two bases during the three-game set.
Clemson put the Terps (28-23, 9-18 ACC) in an early hole that they were unable to climb out of. The Tigers struck in their first at-bat with six consecutive batters reaching base all with two outs. Terrapin starter Alex Robinson struck out the lead-off hitter Tyler Slaton swinging and got Steve Wilkerson to fly out to center. But the Tigers (32-15, 17-10 ACC) next six batters reached on four singles, all up the middle, and two walks resulting in four Tiger runs.
Robinson worked his way out of a bases-loaded no-out jam in the second and settled in afterwards. The freshman got Garrett Boulware to hit a comebacker and to start a 1-2-3 double play. The next batter grounded out to third to end the Tiger threat.
Robinson then retired the Tigers in order in the next two innings before running into trouble in the fifth. After retiring the lead-off batter, the Tigers strung together three consecutive singles followed by two walks to score three in the inning and take a 7-0 lead.
Clemson tacked on one more run in the seventh before the Terps answered in the eighth. The first three Terrapin batters reached base to start the inning. Jose Cuas took the first pitch he saw and drove it through the right side of the infield to score Cleary.
White then drove a ball off the third baseman's glove that rolled into left field allowing Anthony Papio and Blake Schmit to score. With runners at first and second and still no outs, Jordan Hagel hit a ball down to third to force out Cuas. But the throw to first was off the mark and bounced past the first baseman. White scrambled from first to score and Hagel advanced to third on the error.
Kyle Convissar then drove in Hagel with a sacrifice fly to score the Terps' fifth run of the frame cutting the deficit to three.
Clemson picked up an insurance run in the eighth. With two outs, Tyler Krieger flared a ball down the left-field line that snuck just inside the line for a RBI double.
The Tigers' Matt Campbell, who pitched a scoreless eighth, finished the ninth to earn his seventh save of the season. Matt Crownover improved to 6-1 with six scoreless innings, and Robinson took the loss dropping his record to 1-3.
Maryland returns home Wednesday to face VCU at 6 p.m. at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
