CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Maryland wrestling team came up just short in its upset bid in Charlottesville, falling to No. 13 Virginia, 16-15, at Memorial Gymnasium Friday night.

Shyheim Brown and Tyler Goodwin came up big for the Terps (5-8, 1-3 ACC) in the early going, but the Cavaliers (14-3, 3-1 ACC) were able to rack up five wins before staving off a Maryland run at the higher weight classes. 

Virginia jumped out to an early advantage behind Nick Herrmann, who defeated Billy Rappo by a 5-1 decision. Goodwin then tied the score for the Terps. The freshman started fast and finished strong in a 12-6 win.

Brown broke his three-match losing streak to put the Terps in front, upsetting No. 15 Joe Spisak. Gus Sako would then start a Virginia run that would last until 165 pounds, rolling past Frank Goodwin, 8-3.

Danny Orem was able to take No. 15 Blaise Butler to overtime before falling 7-6. At 165 pounds, No. 2 Nick Sulzer picked up an enormously important bonus point for Virginia, beating Ben Dorsay by major decision.

After starting his season 2-0, Ty Snook finally fell at 174 pounds. No. 17 Stephen Doty closed well to defeat the Terrapin senior, 8-2.

No. 1 Jimmy Sheptock got the Terps back in the win column, using a third period takedown to edge past Jon Fausey, 3-2. Needing to get at least one bonus point in its final two matches to tie the score. Maryland almost got it from No. 8 Christian Boley. The New York native had Zach Nye on his back late in the third period, but was unable to obtain the fall. Boley settled for a 6-1 win.

The job was left up to No. 6 Spencer Myers, who was able to win his match, but not put the Terps level or ahead in the dual. The junior defeated Ethan Hayes, 4-3.

The Terps return home for their next match against Duke on Feb. 8. Action is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. from Comcast Pavilion.
