COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland men's lacrosse program is preparing for a big weekend of activities, featuring the annual Alumni Game on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2:30 p.m. at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
The festivities begin with the annual Alumni Golf tournament on Friday, Oct. 24 at the University of Maryland Golf Course. The event is set for a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Among the alums already registered to attend are Terrapin All-Americans Gary Besosa ('73), Bob Boneillo ('80), Brian Burlace ('92), Dan Burns ('11), Mike Chanenchuk ('14), Dave Dempsey ('74), Mike Farrell ('76), John Lamon ('79), Ed Mullen ('76), Bill O'Donnell ('73), Chris Passavia ('04), Brian Phipps ('10), Bill Ralph ('90), Jake Reed ('77) and Curtis Roundtree ('84).
A portion of the proceeds from the Alumni Golf tournament are used to help provide funding for the continued medical care of former head coach Dick “Big Man” Edell, who retired from coaching prior to the 2002 season due to being diagnosed with inclusion body myositis.
Following the golf tournament, alums and friends of the program are invited to attend a reception and silent auction at the College Park Marriott Inn & Conference Center beginning at 6 p.m.
The weekend continues on Saturday, Oct. 25 with three events.
The 2014 Awards Banquet kicks things off at 9 a.m. at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center. The banquet honors the 2014 team, which finished the season with a 13-4 record, was ranked No. 1 in the nation for several weeks, and earned the program its 12th-consecutive NCAA tournament bid, including a berth in the NCAA Final Four for the third time in the past four seasons.
The fourth annual Forever Young Walk/Run For Pancreatic Cancer Awareness & Research starts the day with registration beginning at noon at the West Gate of Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. The Forever Young Walk/Run is held in memory of Maria Young, mother of former Terrapin All-American Ryan Young, who battled pancreatic cancer for more than three years before succumbing to the disease on April 17, 2011.
Donations are being accepted online with all proceeds benefiting the Lustgarten Foundation, which is a foundation based in Bethpage, N.Y., that has as its mission to advance the scientific and medical research related to the diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of pancreatic cancer and was a helpful resource to Maria Young during her fight with pancreatic cancer.
The annual Alumni Game wraps up the weekend with a scheduled faceoff of 2:30 p.m. at Capital One Field at Byrd. The Alums vs. Current Terps game will feature many of the recent graduates, including current or former MLL players Owen Blye ('13/Boston Cannons), Dan Burns ('11/Chesapeake Bayhawks), Grant Catalino ('11/Chesapeake Bayhawks), Mike Chanenchuk ('14/Charlotte Hounds), Michael Ehrhardt ('14/Charlotte Hounds), Dean Hart ('10/Chesapeake Bayhawks), Paul Gillette ('04/Boston Cannons), Scott LaRue ('11/Charlotte Hounds), Brian Phipps ('10/Ohio Machine), Jeff Reynolds ('09/Chesapeake Bayhawks), Joe Walters ('06/Chesapeake Bayhawks) and Ryan Young ('11/Charlotte Hounds).
New this year is the inaugural Alumni vs. Alumni game, which will feature many of the all-time greats in Maryland men's lacrosse's storied history.
The Alumni Game is open to the public and admission is free. Fans can enter Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium through Gate I on the south end of the stadium.
