College Park, Md. -- Maryland men's basketball coach Mark Turgeon visited with fraternities on Monday evening to celebrate the start of the 2014-15 basketball season. Turgeon, who met with 12 fraternities during a two-hour swing on fraternity row, stopped by to visit during the fraternity's scheduled chapter meetings.
Turgeon's appearances created excitement and fun for each fraternity. A number of fraternity presidents kept Turgeon's visit a surprise to its chapters creating genuine excitement in their meetings. While other fraternities immediately began chanting the school's 'Fight Song' as Turgeon and Maryland Director of Basketball Operations Nima Omidvar entered the meetings.
“We had a lot of fun and really appreciated all of the fraternities allowing us to join them on Monday night, “ Turgeon said. “There was great energy in the room, lots of encouragement from our students and fraternities and tremendous optimism as we get ready to start the season in a few weeks.”
“I thought it was great that Coach Turgeon visited with the chapters and got everybody pumped up for the start of the season,” said Alex Polak, president of the Theta Chi chapter at the University of Maryland. “ I know our chapter was very excited and enjoyed meeting coach Turgeon. He is always welcomed back.”
So why did Turgeon elect to spend his Monday evening with the Greek community? Simple. “Our students play such an integral role in our success.” Turgeon shared. “We're appreciative of their support and look forward to seeing them at the XFINITY Center for our inaugural season in the Big Ten.”
Between photo opportunities with each fraternity, Turgeon shared information about the Terps' competitive home schedule and Maryland's new opponents from the Big Ten.
“The Big Ten has been one of the best conferences in the country over the past few years,” Turgeon said. “We face seven teams in the Top 25 and have a number of outstanding home games. The Big Ten did an outstanding job with our schedule - Indiana, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Michigan are all outstanding programs and we also host Virginia in December as well.”
Maryland hosts San Francisco State in an exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. at XFINITY Center.
