Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The second-ranked Maryland field hockey team picked up its fourth straight win Sunday with a 3-1 victory over No. 18 Old Dominion at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terps ended the Monarchs' five-game win streak.
The Terrapins' defense led them in the win, holding the Monarchs' top three scorers to just four shots on the day. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Brooke Cabrera picked up five saves in the win.
Maryland (9-2, 3-1 B1G) scored its first goal when junior Anna Dessoye scored off penalty corner in the 23rd minute. Dessoye inserted on the play, then senior Steffi Schneid passed it back to her for the score from the left post. The Terps led 1-0 at halftime.
Freshman Moira Putsch extended Maryland's lead to 2-0 when she deflected in senior captain Katie Gerzabek's long pass from the right side in the 52nd minute. Senior captain Maxine Fluharty scored the Terps' third and final goal when she stuck one past Old Dominion goalkeeper Megan Hept with just under seven minutes to play.
Putsch and Fluharty currently lead the Terrapins in scoring with seven goals apiece so far this season. Gerzabek leads Maryland in assists with 11.
The Terrapins own the all-time series over the Monarchs (6-5, 0-1 Big East) at 30-26-1. Old Dominion has won nine NCAA titles (82, 83, 84, 88, 90, 91, 92, 98, 00) and Maryland has won eight (87, 93, 99, 05, 06, 08, 10, 11).
Putsch was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this season Tuesday.
The Terps will host No. 9 Penn State (10-2, 2-1) Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Admission is free and parking will open in lot 11 after 1:30 p.m.
