COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland men's basketball players and student-managers gathered for the inaugural Zaching Against Cancer 5K Run/Walk to support Zach Lederer, a former student-manager who passed away from brain cancer this past March.
The event raised $1,500 for the Zaching Against Cancer Foundation, which provides support and scholarships for cancer patients.
During Lederer's cancer treatment, a picture of was taken of him sitting up in his hospital bed while flexing, portraying his strength. The pose, effectively labeled as “Zaching,” went viral and suddenly had thousands of supporters mimicking the pose
Dez Wells, Evan Smotrcyz, Jake Layman, John Graham, Varun Ram and Spencer Barks attended Sunday's event.
“It was good to see and visit with Zach's parents,” said Barks. “It was an impressive turnout and we were able to raise money and awareness for an important cause. Zach would have been very proud of the event and it's only going to get bigger. I think it will become an annual charitable event that everyone will look forward to and mark on their calendar.”
