WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – In the team's fourth straight match against a top-25 opponent, the Maryland volleyball team fell, 3-0 (15-25, 18-25, 17-25), to No. 16 Purdue Wednesday evening.
For the seventh straight outing, senior outside hitter Ashleigh Crutcher led the match in kills, notching 12 against the Boilermakers.
Errors from Maryland (9-17, 2-13 Big Ten) assisted Purdue (20-7, 10-5) in jumping out to a 10-4 lead in the first set. Junior outside hitter Emily Fraik led the team with three kills in the first stanza. The Boilermakers continued to control the set. Freshman middle blocker Hailey Murray made two late kills and combined for a block with senior middle blocker Catie Coyle before Purdue won the set, 25-15.
Two early blocks in the second set helped the Boilermakers to a 10-3 lead. Sophomore middle blocker Ashlyn MacGregor and Coyle and Murray and Fraik each combined for blocks as the Terps began to work their way back into the game. Two straight kills from Crutcher got Maryland within five points, 16-11, and Purdue called a timeout after another Crutcher kill made the set 17-13.
Fraik, Coyle and Murray each contributed late kills, but the Boilermakers' Annie Drews, who leads the conference in kills (4.07/s), made the final attack to take the set, 25-18.
Crutcher smacked down eight kills in the third set on .400 hitting. The Terps held close early with Purdue as junior libero Amy Dion made a service ace and Crutcher made three kills. After a timeout was called with the Boilermakers up 19-14, Purdue recorded five of the next eight points to take the set, 25-17, and the match victory.
Dion led the Terps with six digs while Murray made three assisted blocks. Sophomore setter Whitney Craigo paced the team with 12 assists while sophomore setter Carlotta Oggioni made 11.
The Terps finish their four-match road stint at No. 11 Nebraska Sunday at 3 p.m. Maryland fell to the Cornhuskers, 3-0, on Nov. 1 in College Park.
