COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Aggies pushed across a run in the top of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie and take the final game of the 2014 Fall World Series by the score of 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
After the Old Liners tied the game in the bottom of the eighth, the Aggies took the lead for good in their half of the ninth. LaMonte Wade and Tim Lewis reached on back-to-back singles and were later moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Cieri. With runners at second and third, Wade came home as the eventual winning run on a passed ball.
Despite the loss, the Old Liners took home the Fall World Series title after winning games one and two on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
Tayler Stiles and Willie Rios combined to give up only one run in seven innings of work including five scoreless innings from Stiles to lead the Aggies. Offensively, Justin Morris totaled three hits and a run scored, while Jose Cuas and LaMonte Wade each recorded two. Wade had a double, single and two runs scored. Cuas finished with a double, single and a run scored.
The Aggies jumped out to a three-run lead in the first three innings. Cieri got the Aggies on the board with a RBI ground ball to score LaMonte Wade after he led off the game with a double.
In the third, the Aggies tacked on two more runs all coming with two outs. A Cuas walk was followed by a Morris single. With two runners on, Kevin singled to score Cuas and was followed by a RBI double from Mike Rescigno to score Morris.
The Old Liners cut the deficit to two in the sixth. Jamal Wade started the inning with a single, one of his four hits on the day, and moved up on a single by John Mazza. Wade would eventually score on a two-out single by Andrew Bechtold.
In the eighth, the Old Liners tied it behind back-to-back RBI singles from Matt Oniffrey and Anthony Papio.
Ryan Selmer got the start for the Old Liners giving up three runs on seven hits over five innings. Andrew Green followed Selmer and pitched two scoreless with three strikeouts, while Rob Galligan worked a scoreless eighth. Alex Robinson was charged with the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the ninth.
After Rescigno got one out in the eighth, Kevin Mooney came on and pitched the final 1-2/3 innings striking out two to get the win.
