COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Shatori Walker-Kimbrough picked up her first career double-double to lead the 11th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team past American, 94-50, Friday night at XFINITY Center. The Terps jumped out to a 30-6 lead in the first half and never looked back.
Walker-Kimbrough led the Terrapins (8-2) with 23 points and a career-high 10 boards. Redshirt senior Laurin Mincy scored 16 points with eight rebounds, while freshman Kristen Confroy and sophomore Brionna Jones added 11 points apiece. Sophomore Lexie Brown dished eight assists.
"I thought it was one of our best games from start to finish," head coach Brenda Frese said. "I thought our starters set the tone from the tip, coming out on a 15-0 run, really being aggressive. I thought their defense led to their rebounding and their transition. We had a lot of fun tonight, we shared the basketball, and we were excited for each other's success. It is a lot of fun to watch our team play when we play like this, some really good things in terms of moving forward."
The Terrapins opened the game on a 15-0 run over the first three minutes of the game. After two quick three-pointers by the Eagles, Maryland went on a second 15-0 run to make it 30-6 with nine minutes left in the half.
Walker-Kimbrough scored 14 of her 23 points and Mincy scored 11 of her 16 in the first half to help the Terrapins lead 48-19 at halftime.
Maryland led by as much as 40 in the second half, 80-40, with 5:42 to play off a jumper by freshman Kiara Leslie.
The Terrapins dominated the glass, 49-28, and beat the Eagles 38-14 in the paint. Maryland scored 18 fastbreak points to American's zero.
Jen Dumiak led American (3-5) with 18 points.
Maryland is ranked No. 11 in the USA Today Division I Coaches poll and No. 14 in the latest Associated Press poll.
