Steve Lamb, a track and field Alumnus, graduated from the University of Maryland in 1965. Lamb was a part of an era of Maryland track and field in which the team dominated the ACC and set groundbreaking performances each time they came together on the track. The esteemed coach Jim Kehoe guided the group and helped them not only be successful on the track, but taught them valuable life skills that Lamb and his teammates cherish to this day.
In 1965, while winning the ACC Championship, Lamb also paved his way into the Maryland record books. His time of 47.37 was remarkable, and earned him recognition as one of the top all-time ACC performers.
“I remember during my sophomore year I ran the 200m…and Coach Kehoe thought his watch was broken because it was such a fast time,” Lamb laughed.
Lamb competed in a variety of events for the Terrapin squad, including the 200m dash, 400m dash, 440yd dash, 4x100 relay and 4x400m relay. Lamb won the ACC titles in the 400-meters in 1964 and 1965. He still holds two of the top-10 fastest times in school history in the 200 and 400-meter races.
“They were the best four years of my life!” Lamb commented about his time running at Maryland. “I loved it, especially when you are winning.” During Lamb's tenure on the team and during Coach Kehoe's career, they never lost an ACC indoor or outdoor championship meet. From 1956-1969, Coach Kehoe maintained a clean record with ACC victories in the conference championships.
Steve majored in Business and Marketing during his time at Maryland. He worked for AMOCO for five years after he graduated, before opening Lamb Awards & Engraving in 1973. The company, located in Westminster, Md., built the famous Testudo statues that are scattered around campus. Lamb also supplies the track and field team with senior batons every spring, as well as other plaques and awards for the end of the season banquet celebration.
Steve currently resides in Baltimore. He recently sold Lamb Awards to his nephew last year after owning the company for 41 years, but still remains very active in the business. He often takes on the task of making deliveries back to the College Park campus where he built many fond memories.
