Maryland softball team manager, Ben Kessler, recently sat down with four-year seniors Amanda McCann and Candice Beards for a Q&A to recognize their dedication to the program since 2011. Today's spotlight features McCann. Check back tomorrow for Beards' spotlight.
A key component in the Terrapin lineup since her freshman season in 2011, McCann has steadily become one of the most potent leadoff hitters in the ACC. Batting a career-best .308 this season, she is the only Terp to have played in all 35 games. McCann currently ranks fourth in program history in triples (8), fifth in stolen bases (35), t-eighth in walks (62) and 10th in runs (101).
What was the best moment of your Maryland career?
My sophomore year we were playing an important game at NC State and I had one of my best games ever; I was 3-for-4 with a 2 RBI go-ahead triple and two run-saving diving catches in center field.
How have you improved as a softball player?
I am much louder on the field, communicating to my teammates; and much louder off the field as well. My freshman year I was more reserved.
What's the most important thing you've learned from being a student-athlete?
The biggest thing I've learned is how to manage time. We are very busy as student-athletes and I have learned how to prioritize the things I need to prioritize and not procrastinate. I am a much better student and athlete when I don't procrastinate.
What's your favorite part about UMD?
The best part about Maryland is the family atmosphere that comes from it and how my teammates have always made it feel like a home away from home.
What was your favorite road trip?
When we went to Seattle for NCAA Regionals in 2012
Who was your role model at Maryland?
Shortstop Kathy McLaughlin (2009-12)
What are your plans for next year and the future?
In the future I want to be a physicians assistant, so next year I am going to stay here and take classes and hopefully intern with an athletic trainer at Maryland.
