Maryland Drops Pair to No. 8 Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Maryland softball team fell short in a pair of games Saturday against No. 8 Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla. The Seminoles took game one, 10-2, before winning the second game, 14-6.

The Terrapins and 'Noles close out their three-game series Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m.

Game one – Florida State 10, Maryland 2

Florida State scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back as it defeated Maryland, 10-2, in the first game of the day.

Amanda McCann, Shannon Bustillos and Erin Pronobis each tallied hits for the Terrapins, with Bustillos knocking in a pair of runs in the third inning.

The Seminoles jumped on the Terps from the outset, scoring four runs in the first inning on three hits and three walks. Victoria East did the bulk of the damage with a two-run double to right center field.

After FSU tacked on another run in the second to take a 5-0 lead, Maryland managed to rattle pitcher Lacey Waldrop as Juli Strange earned a walk and Pronobis and McCann loaded the bases with a pair of singles. Bustillos then came through with a two-run single to pull the Terps within three, 5-2.

The Seminoles were undeterred by the Maryland comeback, however, posting five runs over the next two innings to defeat the Terps, 10-2.

Game two – Florida State 15, Maryland 6

Lindsey Schmeiser and Pronobis each tallied home runs as the Terrapins led the Seminoles early, but ultimately fell, 14-6, in the second game of the doubleheader.

Schmeiser was 3-for-4 in the effort, while Pronobis knocked in three runs and McCann scored a pair.

The Terrapins began the game strong by loading the bases for Candice Beards, who knocked home McCann with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first.

Florida State answered back with a pair of runs in the home half of the first, but Pronobis connected on her first career home run in a Maryland uniform to put the Terps ahead, 3-2. A Beards single then scored McCann to double the Terrapin lead.

After the Seminoles made the game 4-3 on an RBI single, L. Schmeiser rocked her third home run of the season in the top of the fourth.

The eighth-ranked 'Noles were relentless, however, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Courtney Senas to take a 6-5 advantage. The Terps pushed across a final run in the fifth on a Pronobis RBI, but could not keep pace with Florida State, which scored eight runs in the final two innings to secure the victory.
