Lowe, Shawaryn Named Baseball America Freshman All-Americans

COLLEGE PARK, Md. Maryland second baseman Brandon Lowe and right-handed pitcher Mike Shawaryn have been named to the 2014 Baseball America Freshman All-America team, the publication announced Monday.

Lowe earned first team honors, while Shawaryn earned a spot on the second team. The duo had already been named to the Louisville Slugger and NCBWA Freshman All-America teams earlier this summer.

A redshirt freshman from Suffolk, Va., Lowe led the Terps in hitting and ranked second in the Atlantic Coast Conference (.348). A third team All-ACC selection, Lowe also led the club in on-base percentage (.463), slugging percentage (.466) and triples (3). He added 42 RBI, tied with Jose Cuas for the best mark on the club, 35 runs scored, 12 doubles, eight stolen bases and one home run.

A native of Carneys Point, N.J., Shawaryn led the ACC and tied for 13th nationally in wins with 11. His 11 victories is a Maryland single-season school record and included two wins over Florida State and victories against Florida and South Carolina.

On the season, Shawaryn posted a 3.12 ERA with 72 strikeouts compared to 24 walks in 92-1/3 innings of work. In 16 starts, Shawaryn posted eight quality starts including four of his last five appearances.

Maryland is one of only six schools to have multiple players named to the two teams. To view the complete team, visit baseballamerica.com.
