
Ram Volunteers in India for Hoops Creating Hope

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland men's basketball player Varun Ram is currently in Chennai, India volunteering for Hoops Creating Hope – a two week program for students to create and develop the link between leadership, character, teamwork and communication with academic success and future goals.
The Clarksville, Md., native began volunteering in India on July 7, and the program runs through July 18. According to the Hoops Creating Hope website, the program uses basketball as a vehicle of change enable students to learn on the court and in the classroom through play and guided experiential learning.
In addition to teaching the fundamentals of basketball to children, Ram has been busy leading yoga classes and teaching life skills. He also spoke at the Sport in Education Conference on July 12 at The American International School in Chennai.
Ram saw significant time during the early portion of the 2013-14 season, appearing in the first 12 games as a backup point guard. He currently holds a 3.99 GPA in neurobiology and physiology.
