COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Postgame notes following Maryland's 40-37 loss to West Virginia.
Kicking It Off: Maryland fell to 2-1 on the season and West Virginia improved to 2-1 after dropping a 40-37 contest to the Mountaineers Saturday at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. The 77 combined points are the most between the two teams since they combined for 79 total points on Sept. 18 1993 in College Park, a 42-37 WVU victory.
Looking Long: Quarterback C.J. Brown and wide receiver Stefon Diggs hooked up on the Terrapin's first touchdown of the game. The 77-yard scoring reception was the longest completion of Brown's career and the longest reception of Diggs' career. It also marked Diggs' 10th career touchdown reception moving him into the top 10 on Maryland's all-time list in a tie for ninth.
Veii Notches a First: Maryland's second touchdown of the afternoon came on a 26-yard pass from quarterback Caleb Rowe to wide receiver Jacquille Veii. For Veii, it marked his first career touchdown in a Maryland uniform and Rowe's ninth career touchdown pass.
Brown on the Run: Quarterback C.J. Brown's 75- yard touchdown run was a career a long for the signal caller and marked the longest TD run by a FBS quarterback this season. The run pushed Brown over 100 yards rushing for the first time this season and the eighth time in his career. Brown's eight career 100-yard rushing games is tied for fourth on Maryland's all-time with Da'Rel Scott (2007-10).
Diggs over 100: With five catches for 127 yards, wide receiver Stefon Diggs eclipsed 100 yards receiving for the first time this season and the first time since he finished with 110 yards receiving at UConn last season (Sept. 14, 2013). Diggs now has six career 100-yard games, which is tied for fifth in school history with Vernon Davis (2003-05).
Brown to No. 2: With 161 yards rushing, C.J. Brown's performance is the second-highest single-game rushing total by a Maryland quarterback all-time. Brown holds the single-game record with 162 yards rushing against Clemson on Oct. 15, 2011.
Take it Back: Defensive back William Likely returned his second career punt for a touchdown to tie the game at 37-37 in the fourth quarter. Likely's first career punt return TD came at Virginia Tech on Nov. 16, 2013. That is also the last time the Terps returned a punt for a touchdown.
Block That Kick: Defensive lineman Darius Kilgo blocked his first career field goal Saturday. It was Maryland's first blocked field goal since A.J. Francis blocked one at Virginia on Oct. 13, 2012.
Offensive Notes: Running back Brandon Ross finished with five catches for 50 yards, both career highs … Maryland's 447 yards of total offense is the most since totaling 468 against UVA last season (10/12/13) … tight end Andrew Isaacs tallied his first career reception.
Defensive Notes: Defensive back Sean Davis led all players in tackles with 13 to set a new career high … defensive back William Likely forced his first career fumble, which was recovered by linebacker Cole Farrand, the second fumble recovery of his career … Likely also picked off his second career pass in the contest … linebacker Yannick Ngakoue tied a career high he set last weekend at USF with three tackles for loss. He now has six on the season … defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson, Darius Kilgo and Andre Monroe all tallied sacks. For Monroe, he now has 16.5 career sacks.
