Maryland Madness Set for Oct. 17

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland athletics department has announced that the 2014 Maryland Madness, will be held on Fri., Oct. 17 at 8:00 p.m. in XFINITY Center.
Maryland Madness will be the first chance for fans to get a glimpse of the 2014-15 Maryland men's and women's basketball teams, in addition to the brand new state-of-the-art video board in the XFINITY Center. The Terrapin men and women will also be unveiling new 2014-15 Under Armour uniforms. In addition, the Maryland volleyball team will play on XFINITY Center's main court for the first time since 2010.
Doors will open at 5 p.m., as fans are encouraged to attend the Maryland volleyball team's match against nationally ranked Michigan State in XFINITY Center at 6 p.m.
Admission to the evening's activities is free (no ticket required) and seating is first-come, first-serve.
The idea of Maryland Madness, which is celebrated in some fashion by teams all across the country, actually originated on the campus of the University of Maryland. Then-Maryland men's basketball coach Lefty Driesell invited fans to an open practice on Oct. 15, 1971, to celebrate the beginning of the season, calling the event “Midnight Madness.”
