Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior Shatori Walker-Kimbrough had a career-high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the sixth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team to a second straight dominant win, 105-50 over High Point on Wednesday night at the XFINITY Center.
Walker-Kimbrough scored 19 of her points before halftime. Junior Brionna Jones also had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Terrapins (2-0), who opened the game on an 18-5 run and scored the last 16 points of the first half to make it 48-20 at the break.
“I thought we came out ready to play,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “Defensively for us, we've got a lot improvement to do. I thought Shatori (Walker-Kimbrough) has been so consistent coming out in back to back games and leading this team with her energy and her intensity. She's just setting the tone for us, we've just got to have more players continue to play at that pace and consistently be there as we get ready to play.”
Freshman Kiah Gillespie added 19 points and fifth-year senior Brene Moseley had 13 as Maryland posted 100 points in consecutive games for the first time since home victories over Wofford and College of Charleston in December 2013.
Kaylah Keys had 12 points and Kat Harris added 10 for High Point (1-2), which lost by more than 40 points again after falling 89-48 at North Carolina State on Sunday.
Walker-Kimbrough had her second fast start after scoring 20 of her 22 points before halftime in Maryland's 102-53 victory over UMass-Lowell on Saturday.
The junior and second-year starter's early 18-foot jumper from the top of the arc made it 12-2 and coaxed High Point coach DeUnna Hendrix into her first timeout. It didn't help, as Walker-Kimbrough followed with 3-pointers from each corner to push Maryland's lead to 13.
She scored six points in a later spurt, including a slick putback off Moseley's miss, while also feeding Moseley for a transition layup and swatting one of her four blocks.
Gillespie made a layup to push the lead above 40 for the first time, 71-30. Moseley's late layup made it 99-49 with under three minutes to play.
Former Terrapin and 2006 National Champion Laura Harper is an assistant with the Panthers. Harper, Marissa Coleman, Jade Perry, Ashleigh Newman and Angel Ross were recognized as members of the 2006 NCAA Championship team prior to the game.
“It was a special was a special night for us having Laura Harper come back and recognizing members of our 2006 National Championship team,” Frese said. “It's awesome to be able to see it come full circle and have her now in coaching and come back here into XFINITY.”
Frese is closing in on 400 career wins. She carries a record of 399-134 (.749) over 17 seasons as a head coach.
