BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Maryland wrestling team performed well at the 2015 Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open Sunday afternoon at Binghamton University.
The Terps advanced three to the quarterfinals while redshirt senior Lou Mascola notched two dominate wins for his day came to an end. Redshirt freshmen Alfred Bannister (141) and Garrett Wesneski (197) along with true freshman Brendan Burnham (165) all made it to the final eight.
Mascola continued his solid form with a tech fall of Franklin & Marshall's Mike Marano before pinning Matt Herbert of Sacred Heart in just 0:26.
Bannister started his day with an 11-3 major decision win over Dominic Giannangeli of Penn State. He then notched a tech fall over Camden Fischer of Lehigh before dropping a 4-3 decision to nationally ranked Todd Preston of Harvard.
At 165 pounds, Burnham, making his open tournament debut, recieved a by in the opening round before defeating Jordan Pagano of Rutgers in sudden victory, Burnham followed up with an 11-7 decision over Derek Holcomb of Buffalo before bowing out at the hands of Cornell's Drew Pickett.
Wesneski earned an 18-0 tech fall over Jeremiah Imonode of Army Prep and then pinned Luke Schaeffer of Navy in 2:36. He dropped his quarterfinal match to Jake Taylor of Cornell, 5-2.
Maryland had a number of wrestlers in contention to place in the consolation bracket, but was forced to leave the tournament early as a result of it running late.
Maryland will travel select wrestlers to the East Stroudsburg Open next Saturday.
