MOBILE, Ala. – Sophomore right hander Mike Shawaryn gave up just three hits over seven innings of work as the Maryland baseball team defeated South Alabama, 8-0, at Stanky Field Friday night.
Junior LaMonte Wade was the offensive catalyst, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Junior Kevin Martir added three hits while freshman Andrew Bechtold drove in two.
The Terps (4-0) jumped on the Jaguars quickly with a four-run opening inning. South Alabama starter Austin Stephens plunked sophomore Brandon Lowe before giving up a single to Wade that sent Lowe to third. Consecutive singles from Nick Cieri and Martir plated two to give Maryland a 2-0 advantage.
The inning continued after senior Tim Lewis was hit by a pitch. Bechtold plated Cieri and Martir with a single to give the Terps a 4-0 lead after one. Wade singled in Lowe in the second to give Maryland another run.
Armed with a five-run advantage, Shawaryn took over. The sophomore dominated South Alabama from the start, retiring the first 10 batters he faced before a Cole Billingsley single in the fourth. Shawaryn finished with six strikeouts and threw just 72 pitches.
Lewis helped the Terps tack on another run in the fifth with a single that beat a drawn in infield that scored Jose Cuas. Wade and freshman Kevin Smith picked up RBIs in the sixth to increase the Maryland lead to 8-0.
Redshirt freshman Ryan Selmer and freshman Willie Rios made their Maryland debuts in relief and completed the shutout. Selmer pitched a clean eighth while Rios finished off the Jaguars off in the ninth.
The win gives Maryland its first 4-0 start since 1987. Maryland is 19-4 in its last 23 contests dating back to last season.
