Shawaryn, Smith Earn Big Ten Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sophomore right-hander Mike Shawaryn earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors, while freshman shortstop Kevin Smith won Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Shawaryn was spectacular in the Terps' 8-0 win over South Alabama at the South Alabama Tournament. The New Jersey native pitched seven scoreless innings in an ultra-efficient 72 pitches, allowing just three hits and striking out six. Shawaryn also did not give up a walk.

Smith starred throughout the weekend at the plate and in the field. The New Yorker batted .455 (5-for-11) with four RBIs, including a career-high three hits in the Terps' come-from-behind win over Arkansas.
