BEL AIR, Md. – Senior left fielder Tim Lewis slapped two doubles and notched two RBIs as the No. 16 Maryland baseball team got past Richmond, 8-3, at the Harford Sports Complex on the campus of Harford Community College Wednesday night.
The Terrapins (9-4) also received a sterling performance from its bullpen over 5 1/3 innings. Redshirt freshman Ryan Selmer, freshman Taylor Bloom and junior Jared Price combined to allow just one hit, with Selmer picking up his first career win.
Maryland grabbed the lead in the opening frame. With two outs, Kevin Martir walked before Jose Cuas singled to left. Lewis was able to reach on an error and Martir came around to score to give the Terps a 1-0 lead.
A Michael Mormon two-run double gave Richmond the lead after two innings. Another Spider run in the third set the stage for Maryland's two-run bottom half. Cuas singled to set up Lewis, who doubled to right to score Cuas and cut the lead to 3-2.
Freshman Kevin Biondic followed with the first hit of his career, a triple, to plate Lewis and tie the game.
Maryland took the lead for good in the fourth. A Spider error helped Kevin Smith score to put the Terps up 4-3.
From there, the Terrapin bullpen controlled the game. Selmer took over for starter Jake Drossner during the fourth and threw 1 1/3 innings of one-hit ball. Bloom relieved the redshirt freshman in the sixth and pitched a scoreless two innings.
Maryland added three insurance runs in the seventh. Martir began the inning with a single and then advanced on a passed ball. Cuas then notched his third hit of the game with a single to right that plated Martir, but was caught in a rundown and put out trying to go to second.
After Lewis struck out, Anthony Papio singled to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch to continue the Maryland threat. Biondic delivered again with a double to score Papio. A Spider error allowed pinch hitter Jamal Wade to reach and Biondic to score as Maryland took a 7-3 lead.
The Terrapins notched a single run in the eighth on a Lewis double. Price took over on the mound in the eighth and closed out the game, striking out five-of-six batters over two innings.
Maryland returns to action this weekend for a three-game set against Princeton at Shipley Field at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium. Game times are set for Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.
