COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Brandon Lowe hit his ninth home run of the season, but Iowa defeated the No. 16 Maryland baseball team, 2-1, at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Terrapins (24-10, 8-4) outhit the Hawkeyes, but were unable to capitalize on a couple of scoring opportunities. Junior Robert Galligan threw 5 and 2/3 innings of one run relief.
Iowa chased Maryland starter Kevin Mooney in the second and scored a run to take the lead. The Terps loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame, but here unable to bring any runs across.
In the fifth, Lowe got ahold of a 3-2 pitch from Hawkeye starter Calvin Mathews and drove it just over the right field fence. His nine home runs leads the Big Ten.
Iowa plated the winning run in the seventh. Nick Day reached second on an error before scoring on a double play after advancing to third.
In the bottom of the inning, the Terps put two on with two out, but Anthony Papio grounded out to end the inning. After going three up, three down in the eighth, Lowe's single with one out in the ninth was the closest Maryland would get to a run. Kevin Martir struck out to end the game.
Maryland returns to action Tuesday with a contest at Liberty. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
