COLLEGE PARK, Md. – After earning his conference leading eighth win of the season Friday against Iowa, Maryland sophomore right handed pitcher Mike Shawaryn has been named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Shawaryn gave up just one earned run over eight innings while striking out nine against the first-place Hawkeyes. His eight wins lead the country and his 19 career wins are the most for any sophomore in the nation.
Shawaryn is now just one victory shy of the Maryland record for career wins. The Carneys Point, N.J., native leads the Big Ten in strikeouts (69), opposing batting average (.193) and holds a 1.89 ERA.
He was named to the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award watch list on Wednesday. The award is given to the top amateur baseball player in the country.
Shawaryn previously won the award on March 16 and Feb. 23. He is expected to pitch Friday as the Terps open up a three-game against national powerhouse Cal State Fullerton. Friday's contest is set for a 7 p.m., first pitch and will be broadcast nationally on BTN.
