BALTIMORE – The No. 1 Maryland lacrosse team (15-0) closed the nonconference schedule with a 17-9 win over No. 18 John Hopkins (11-3) Wednesday evening at Homewood Field.
Brooke Griffin led the Terrapins with five goals, while Taylor Cummings posted four. Zoe Stukenberg and Megan Whittle each recorded hat tricks and Kelly McPartland and Erin Collins each added a goal.
“I was really pleased with our effort tonight,” said head coach Cathy Reese. “I thought we came out strong, and that was something we'd talked about pregame. We wanted to make sure we came out firing, came out attacking. Hopkins is a tough team. They challenged us a lot defensively and they put the ball away when they had the opportunity. We just made sure we capitalized on our chances.”
The Terps started with a quick 2-0 lead as Cummings scored at 29:08 and set up Griffin for a goal just 18 seconds later. The Blue Jays cut the lead in half at 25:48. Cummings scored again at 22:08 as she grabbed her own rebound and found the goal. Stukenberg scored on a crossbody shot at 21:30 and the Terps took a 5-1 lead.
Johns Hopkins picked up a free-position goal at 13:45, but Cummings hit Griffin with a stretch pass off the draw and Griffin increased the lead to 6-2 just 18 seconds later. After another Hopkins goal, Griffin completed her first-half hat trick at 8:16.
Cummings caused a goalkeeper turnover and Griffin scored on an empty net at 2:38. The Blue Jays seemingly ended scoring with 53 seconds remaining in the half, but Stukenberg was able to get a buzzer-beating shot in the goal. The Terps led, 9-4, at the half.
The Blue Jays got on the board first in the second half. Collins scored her first of the game at 25:19. Whittle tallied her 50th goal of the season on a free-position shot at 19:04. After another Hopkins goal, Cummings won the draw and scored at 15:47. Stukenberg finished her hat trick at 12:07, and Whittle completed her second-half hat trick at 8:43.
Griffin added her fifth goal of the evening at 5:17 and Cummings scored on a free-position at 3:46, and the Terps took the 17-9 win.
Goalkeeper Alex Fitzpatrick made four saves and picked up two ground balls in the game. Megan Douty led the Terrapin defense with two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Maryland led 36-21 in shots and held a 15-11 ground ball advantage. The Terps led 20-7 in draw controls, including 11 from Cummings.
