DALLAS – University of Maryland sophomore right-handed pitcher Mike Shawaryn has been named a semifinalist for the 2015 Dick Howser Award, given to the top player in collegiate baseball, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced Friday.
Shawaryn, the Maryland all-time leader in career wins, has a Big Ten high 11 wins this season. Shawaryn also paces the conference in strikeouts with 115 and innings pitched with 96.1. He holds a 1.68 ERA and opponents are batting just .202 against the right hander.
The Carneys Point, N.J., native's 22 career wins are the most for any sophomore in the country. He was recently named to the USA Golden Spikes Award watch list and has been named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week four times this season.
Shawaryn accepted an invitation to play for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team this summer. He is the second Terrapin to ever play for the United States.
This is the 29th year of the Dick Howser Trophy, presented by Easton Foundations. The finalists will be announced on Wednesday, June 10. The 2015 award will be presented at TD Ameritrade Stadium in downtown Omaha, the home of the College World Series for the fifth year.
