DURHAM, N.C. – University of Maryland right-handed pitcher Mike Shawaryn is among the semifinalists for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, the organization announced Friday. The award is presented to the best amateur baseball player in the country.
Shawaryn has a Big Ten high 12 wins this season and his total is the Maryland all-time record for single season victories. Shawaryn also paces the conference in strikeouts with 124 and innings pitched with 103.1. He holds a 1.65 ERA and opponents are batting just .204 against the right hander.
The Carneys Point, N.J., native's school record 23 career wins are the most for any sophomore in the country. He was recently a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten First Team and was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week four times this season.
Shawaryn accepted an invitation to play for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team this summer. He is the second Terrapin to ever play for the United States. He is also a Dick Howser Award semifinalist.
Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2015. This announcement officially marks the opening of voting for amateur baseball fans from across the country on GoldenSpikesAward.com. As part of this selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of names. Voting will be open until Friday, May 29.
USA Baseball will announce the finalists on June 2. The 2015 Golden Spikes Award winner will be named on Tuesday, June 23, at a presentation in Los Angeles.
Last year, University of Kentucky's A.J. Reed took home the prestigious award, joining a group of recent winners that includes Kris Bryant (2013), Mike Zunino (2012), Trevor Bauer (2011), Bryce Harper (2010), Stephen Strasburg (2009) and Buster Posey (2008).
