
Zivec Advances to NCAA Finals in 1500m

JACKSONVILLE – Jakub Zivec finished fifth overall in the 1500m run to qualify for the NCAA Finals and pace the Maryland track & field team at the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Fla., over the weekend.
Zivec crossed the finish line in 3:45.11, just a tenth off the winning time, to advance to the final round. The Finals will be held in Eugene, Oregon, at Hayward Field from June 10 – 13.
"Jakub had some gutsy races this weekend,” said head coach Andrew Valmon. “He ran with confidence and made sure that he was one of the top guys punching his ticket to Eugene. I am proud of the way he competed out there and look forward to seeing him finish the job in Oregon. He has done a lot for our Men's program.”
Seniors Amber Melville and Thea LaFond finished their impressive careers with a 14th place finish in the high jump and 22nd place finish in the triple jump, respectively.
Junior Chioma Onyekwere competed in both the shot put and the discus events. Onyekwere finished 17th overall in the shot put with a toss of 50'5 ½”, while adding a 24th place in the discus with a throw of 160'11”.
Micha Powell ran a personal best 53.48 to place 26th in the 400m run, as Myah Hick ran a season-best 2:07.16 in the 800m run.
Additionally, senior Pat Cole closed a prominent throwing career by launching the hammer 190'5”. Peyton Wade cleared the opening high jump height to place 40th overall.
