COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland shortstop Kevin Smith was named a second team Freshman All-American by D1Baseball.com, the site announced Monday.
Smith started 65 games, primarily at shortstop, batting .273 with 55 runs, 35 RBIs and seven home runs. He also stole a team-high 11 bases and tallied 19 multi-hit games.
The East Greenbush, N.Y., native battled through a shoulder injury during the middle of the season and flashed a fantastic glove at short throughout the year.
He was named to the Big Ten Championships All-Tournament team after a standout performance that helped the Terps reach the championship game.
Smith is Maryland's third freshman All-American in the last two seasons after second baseman Brandon Lowe and right handed pitcher Mike Shawaryn were selected last season.
