CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Despite 7.1 innings of stalwart pitching from sophomore Mike Shawaryn, the Maryland baseball team fell to Virginia, 5-3, Friday evening in game one of the NCAA Super Regionals at Davenport Field.
Maryland and Virginia return to action tomorrow at 3 pm for game two of the three-game Super Regional series on ESPNU.
The Cavalier offense could do little against the pitching of Shawaryn, before scoring five runs in the eighth inning upon his relief from the game.
Virginia's offense awoke by stringing together five hits, including a bases loaded 3-RBI double by Kevin Doherty that was nearly caught on a spectacular sprawling effort by the centerfielder LaMonte Wade.
The Terps threatened to come back in the bottom of the eighth after Kevin Smith opened the inning by reaching second base, but they could not muster the comeback.
Maryland opened the scoring in the fifth inning, as Nick Cieri and Jose Cuas reached base on a pair of walks and advanced on a Virginia wild pitch. That sequence set the scene for Wade, who continued his spectacular postseason with a liner to center field that scored Cieri and Cuas and gave Maryland a 2-0 advantage.
Maryland added an insurance run two innings later when Cuas hit a double to right field and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Tim Lewis. Kevin Biondic then laid down a textbook suicide squeeze bunt to score Cuas for the 3-0 lead.
Wade finished the game with two RBIs, while Cuas scored a pair of runs to lead Maryland offensively.
