BETHESDA, Md. - Maryland men's basketball head coach Mark Turgeon served as the keynote speaker at the Washington Post All-Metropolitan Luncheon Monday afternoon at the Bethesda North Marriott.
Turgeon, who was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in the Terps' inaugural season in the conference, spoke to the over 700 in attendance, which included First Team All-Met selections and coaches of the year from the fall, winter and spring sports.
As part of his speech, Turgeon talked about how sports can be an exemplary educational tool.
“Sports teach you to be competitive,” Turgeon said. “It provides you the opportunity to be a teammate. There is the satisfaction of winning but it is also important to overcome adversity and I always share with my team to stay even keel.
“In order to be the best, you can't worry about what other players are doing. Focus on what you can do to achieve success and never stop trying to be the best. And always focus on the importance of using all of your strengths in life to be successful."
Past speakers include Arthur Ashe, Cal Ripken Jr., Gary Williams, Norv Turner, Charlie Weatherbie, Herman Boone, Jeff Jones, Bruce Arena, Wes Unseld, Brian Mitchell, James Brown and Morgan Wootten, among many others.
