Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The 10th-ranked Maryland field hockey team won its third straight game Sunday with a 5-2 victory over New Hampshire at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
Senior co-captain Sarah Sprink, the 2014 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, led the way for the Terrapins (5-3) with two goals and an assist.
Sprink banged in her first goal of the day to open the scoring in the 18th minute off a penalty corner set up by redshirt junior Emma Rissinger and sophomore Lein Holsboer.
Sophomore Carrie Hanks made it a two-goal lead for the Terrapins when she scored her first goal of the year off a penalty corner with 14 minutes left in the half. Sprink assisted on the score.
Sprink struck once more, once again off a penalty corner, in the 26th minute. Holsboer and freshman Floor Paanakker set up the play. Senior Anna Dessoye tipped in Paanakker's rebounded shot to make it 4-0 with 3:03 left in the half.
The Wildcats (2-5) got on the board with 58 seconds left in the first period when Meg Flatley scored off a rebounded shot. The Terps took a 4-1 lead into the break.
Just over seven minutes into the second half, the Wildcats' Meg Carroll scored their second goal of the afternoon with a short shot from five yards out.
In the 48th minute, freshman Julie Duncan streaked down the right sideline, then sent a pass into senior Welma Luus from the baseline. Luus corralled the pass and sent it in from just a few yards out to make it 5-2.
The Terrapins took 22 shots to the Wildcats' 14. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Holliday picked up three saves in the first half and senior goalkeeper Jill Genovese notched four in the second.
Head coach Missy Meharg is in her 28th season as head coach of the Terrapins. She's led them to a record of 495-122-9 (.798), seven NCAA titles, 20 conference titles and 16 Final Fours. Meharg has been named NFHCA National Coach of the Year an unprecented nine times.
Next, Maryland will host Princeton (1-3) Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Admission is free and parking is free and open after 4 p.m.
