The Maryland softball team opened up the Julie Wright era in grand fashion on Saturday, sweeping a pair of games against Delaware.
Game One:
A five run second inning, paired with seven solid innings in the circle by Hannah Dewey and Brenna Nation powered Maryland to a 5-2 win over Delaware.
In the second inning, a Delaware error and a Destiney Henderson sacrifice bunt put two on with nobody out. Sarah Calta followed up with a chopper up the middle to load the bases for Jacqui Pascual. Pascual came through with a two RBI single up the middle to give Maryland a 2-0 lead. After a Hannah Dewey walk and Skylynne Ellazar single, Corey Schwartz would get hit on the elbow to bring in another run. Juli Strange then kept the second inning surge going with a single of her own, Kylie Datil matched Schwartz and took one to the elbow herself to make it 5-0 Maryland. The Terrapins plated ten batters and got four hits and three walks to open up a 5-0 lead.
Hannah Dewey pitched four innings of no-hit ball. Brenna Nation followed with three solid innings, allowing three hits and one earned run.
The Blue Hens found two runs in the seventh, but Maryland held on for a 5-2 victory.
Game Two:
Timely hitting by Sarah Lang, Skylynne Ellazar, and Corey Schwartz fueled a three run fifth-inning to lead Maryland to a 5-2 victory in game two.
Delaware put together two runs off three hits in the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
Freshman Ari Jarvis started the game for Maryland, pitching four innings. The California native allowed two runs and struck out four.
Down 2-0, Sarah Lang would lead off the fifth inning for Maryland with a rocket single up the middle. Emily Libero, in the pinch-hitting role, got hit on the first pitch to put two on with no outs. Hannah Dewey came through with a RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit in half, now 2-1 Delaware. Skylynne Ellazar loaded the bases with an infield single and then Corey Schwartz promptly followed with a go-ahead two RBI double to short left field. The Terrapins batted around in the fifth, scoring three runs off of four hits to take a 3-2 lead
Maryland would tack on two more in the sixth when a crafty first and third play called by Head Coach Julie Wright scored Emma Mires. Then, Skylynne Ellazar tripled to left-center field to score Hannah Dewey to make it 5-2 Maryland.
The Terps will be back in action next Sunday, October 4 with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against Georgetown at the Maryland Softball Stadium.
