UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — Maryland Men's Basketball Coach Mark Turgeon joined Six Flags America, the region's largest theme park, Thursday to raise awareness and funds for cancer research and prevention. To mark the announcement and further both organizations' support of the American Cancer Society, Turgeon joined Six Flags America Park President, Rick Howarth, and other supporters, who were drenched under hundreds of gallons of water under the Splashwater Falls, a giant interactive water play structure, coming in spring 2016.
Together, Six Flags America and the University of Maryland pledge to raise up to $5,000 dollars for the annual Coaches vs. Cancer tournament. Starting today through September 7, Six Flags America will donate one dollar to the American Cancer Society from every 2016 Season Pass sold online during the company's special Flash Sale. Splashwater Falls will feature dozens of slides, nets, sprays and geysers, topped by a super-sized tipping bucket that will dump water on guests below throughout the day.
“We are excited to partner with Six Flags America and the American Cancer Society on this extremely impactful initiative,” said Turgeon. “Pediatric cancer has affected so many children and families and it is imperative that we raise awareness for this very important platform.”
In addition to the support of Coaches vs. Cancer, Six Flags America is making plans to host a special celebration for children fighting cancer, and their care providers, as part of the official grand opening of Splashwater Falls next spring.
“Six Flags America is a favorite destination for having fun with friends and family and we feel it is our privilege to be able to give back to our team members, guests and the community,” said Howarth. “We appreciate Coach Turgeon joining us and experiencing the dumping bucket concept for our new Splashwater Falls attraction.”
