COLLEGE PARK, Md. – University of Maryland baseball players Mike Shawaryn and Kevin Smith earned preseason All-Big Ten honors from Perfect Game, the scouting service announced Thursday.
Shawaryn, a junior, was also tabbed as Perfect Game's Big Ten Preseason Pitcher of the Year. He piled up 13 wins with 138 strikeouts, both top single season marks in school history. He sported a 1.71 ERA and racked up 116 IP last season.
The Carneys Point, N.J., native owns the most career wins in Maryland history (24) and became the second Terp in history to play for USA Baseball when he suited up for the Collegiate National Team this summer.
Shawaryn was also included on D1Baseball's top-300 2016 prospects at No. 22. Junior Nick Cieri was the 168th-ranked prospect on the list.
Smith, a 2015 first team Perfect Game Freshman All-American, started 65 games and finished with a .273 average with seven home runs and 55 runs scored. He also notched a team-high 11 stolen bases and provided outstanding defense at the shortstop position.
The East Greenbush, N.Y., native was also named to D1Baseball.com's top-100 2017 prospects at No. 52.
Maryland opens its 2016 campaign with a three-game series at Alabama starting on Feb. 19. The Terps advanced to their second straight Super Regional last season and finished with a school record 42 wins.
