COLUMBUS, Ohio – The sixth-ranked Maryland field hockey team (11-3, 5-1 B1G) picked up its fourth straight victory with a 2-1 decision in overtime at Ohio State Friday afternoon. Sophomore Linnea Gonzales scored in the 77th minute to seal the win.
"Ohio State came to play top Division I hockey and their goalkeeper was a huge impact for them," head coach Missy Meharg said. "Maryland put the ball in the circle with strength and deflections but was denied by her play. Like our women's basketball coach Brenda Frese says, 'Overtime is our time' and we excelled in the extra period."
Junior Carrie Hanks put the Terps on the board first when she scored off a penalty corner with nine minutes left in the first half. Graduate student Grace Balsdon and redshirt senior Emma Rissinger assisted on the play.
The Buckeyes (5-9, 0-5) tied the match at one with a score 81 seconds into the second half. Irene Fritschy notched the tying goal.
The score stayed tied through over 40 minutes of action and into the sudden-victory overtime period.
Gonzales scored off a penalty corner 6:47 into overtime when she took a pass from Balsdon and sent it into the far corner of the cage.
Maryland took 20 shots to Ohio State's 13 and redshirt junior Sarah Bates picked up four saves.
Madison Maguire was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week Tuesday for the first time in her career.
Next, the Terrapins will play at No. 5 Penn State (12-1, 4-1) Sunday at 4 p.m. in University Park, Pa.
