COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 2016 'Zaching Against Cancer' 5K run in memory of former Maryland basketball manager Zach Lederer took place on Sunday on the campus of the University of Maryland.
An on-going inspiration to the Maryland men's basketball program, Lederer passed away in March of 2014 at the age of 20 after a heroic battle with brain cancer. He was known for his optimism and energy despite his cruel disease.
In his honor, the 2016-17 Maryland men's basketball team attended the event and lined up at the finish line to congratulate runners who completed the race.
“It's really great to see people come out and run and do things like this to support a great cause,” said senior Damonte Dodd. “The impact that Zach had on everyone with how hard he fought was a blessing. I'm glad he was able to bring more awareness to how hard people fight cancer and inspire others to keep fighting.”
Proceeds from the event will support the Zaching Against Cancer Foundation (ZACF), which is a non-profit charity established to provide support, strength, inspiration and positive influences to cancer patients and their support networks. ZACF provides college scholarships to those who have overcome adversity as a cancer survivor or caregiver.
