CHICAGO – Gordon Wild, Alex Crognale and Cody Niedermeier claimed top Big Ten men's soccer honors while Sasho Cirovski was named 2016 Big Ten Coach of the Year, the league announced Friday.
Wild was tabbed Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and Crognale and Niedermeier garnered Defensive and Goalkeeper of the Year honors, respectively.
Wild – a sophomore transfer from USC Upstate - led the conference in goals with 15 this season. The Cologne, Germany, native is also third nationally in total goals scored. The forward has notched six-game winners this season and also boasts four assists in 2016.
Crognale and Niedermeier have led the Terps – who remain unbeaten at 15-0-2 – defensively. Maryland has racked up six shutouts this season, including a program-best five consecutive earlier this season. Crognale has also helped bolster Maryland's high-flying attack as well, registering six goals. Niedermeier boasts a stellar 0.83 goals against average while playing every minute in goal for the No. 1-ranked Terrapins.
Cirovski led Maryland to its first unbeaten season since 1968, which included a perfect 11-0 record at Ludwig Field. This is the fourth conference coach of the year accolade (2003, 2005, 2012, 2016) for Cirovski and his first in Big Ten play.
In addition, Wild, Crognale and Niedermeier were tabbled to the All-Big Ten First Team, joining teammates Chris Odoi-Atsem and Amar Sejdic. Suli Dainkeh and Eryk Williamson each snagged second team honors.
Rookie defender Donovan Pines landed on the All-Freshman Team.
Maryland – the top seed in the upcoming Big Ten Men's Soccer Championship – will host the winner of Rutgers/Michigan on Sunday at 4 p.m. in quarterfinal action on Sunday.
