COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland Athletics Department celebrated graduation day with several senior student-athletes and their families and friends as part of Tuesday's December Commencement. A reception was held prior to the main ceremony as Maryland student-athletes prepared for a memorable day.
“This is a special day for our student-athletes to earn their degrees after years of hard work and dedication,” said Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson. “We congratulate each of our student-athletes and their families as we celebrate this milestone.”
A total of 30 student-athletes earned their degrees Tuesday.
“The entire ICA team is very proud of our graduates,” said Chris Uchacz, Associate Athletic Director and Director of Academic Service and Career Development Unit. “They have worked diligently in the classroom while juggling college athletics. We are also appreciative that their families entrusted us with their sons and daughters and are gracious enough to share some of their day with us.”
The graduating class includes 10 members of their respective sport's all-conference academic teams.
“Academics has always played an important role in my life and the University of Maryland provided me the opportunity to pursue a meaningful double major in Finance and Information Systems from one of the top business schools in the country,” said Adam Greene of the Maryland football team. “Now that graduation has come and I look back on the journey I've had, earning my degree while playing football at Maryland has been a dream come true and it's been an honor to represent both. Pursuing both of my passions has been incredible and I look forward to continuing my academic and athletic careers as I transition into being a full time Master of Finance student.”
“Getting my degree is very important to me because it's another step closer to becoming a chiropractor,” said Sarah Calta of the Maryland softball team. “Being able to balance academics with playing a Division I sports is challenging, and that's why I take a lot of pride in the fact that I finished with a strong GPA I can be proud of.”
