Schmeiser Named Senior CLASS Award Candidate

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.- A star on and off the field, Lindsey Schmeiser has been named a candidate for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award.  Schmeiser is one of 30 softball student-athletes nationwide named to the award list for their notable achievements in the four areas of excellence- community, classroom, character and competition.

“No one is more deserving of this award than Lindsey,” said head coach Julie Wright. “She is the face of Maryland softball and the epitome of a student-athlete.  I am very proud of her and her accomplishments thus far and look forward to watching her the rest of this season.”

The Dunkirk Md., native is one of the most decorated players in Maryland softball history. Schmeiser has a career .335 batting average, which stands second on the Maryland softball career leaderboard. Just yesterday against Alabama, Schmeiser broke the program record for career home runs with a sixth inning blast. The senior has 31 career long balls. In addition, Schmeiser is third all time in runs scored (124), sixth in doubles (36) 4th in RBI's (130), and sixth in walks (77). On the single season leaderboard, Schmeiser holds the Maryland record for doubles (21) and RBI's (59).

Schmeiser has earned numerous accolades during her Terrapin career including 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year, 2013 First-Team All ACC, 2015 First-Team All Big Ten, and a Big Ten Player of the Week honor (3/16/15).

Off the field, Schmeiser has made her mark. Academically, the pre-veterinary major has been named to the dean's list twice and was named to both the ACC and Big Ten Academic Teams. In the community, Schmeiser has worked countless hours for Five Star Athletic Softball Camps. The senior has also done a lot of work with her love: animals, helping with rabies vaccination clinics and has assisted the Schnauzer Rescue of the Mid-Atlantic.

The Big Ten had the most candidates for the award out of all conferences, with Illinois' Allie Bauch,  Michigan's Kelsey Susalla, Nebraska's Kiki Stokes, Northwestern's Andrea Filler, Ohio State's Erika Leonard, Penn State's Lexi Knief and Rutgers' Jordan Whitley also being selected.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2016 Women's College World Series®.
